Dr. Kim Kerr Named Attending Physician of the Year at UC San Diego Health

Dr. Kim KerrDr. Kim Kerr, Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine and Medical Director of the Thornton Intensive Care Unit, has been selected as the Attending Physician of the Year for 2015-2016 at UC San Diego Health.

On National Doctors Day each year, UC San Diego Health honors its physicians for their commitment and service in health care. The Attending Physician of the Year award recognizes an attending faculty member for particular excellence in the many facets of patient care and clinical teaching.

Kim M. Kerr, MD, attends on the pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE), ICU and pulmonary consult services. Her chief clinical and research interests are in chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension and critical care.

Dr. Kerr has been named on the San Diego’s Top Doctors list every year for the past seven years.

E-Cigarette Vapor Boosts Superbugs and Dampens Immune System

In lab and mouse experiments, exposure promotes bacterial virulence and inflammation, while blocking the body’s ability to fight infection —

Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System report data suggesting that e-cigarettes are toxic to human airway cells, suppress immune defenses and alter inflammation, while at the same time boosting bacterial virulence. The mouse study is published January 25 by the Journal of Molecular Medicine.

$5 Million ResMed Gift Supports Sleep Medicine at UC San Diego

The University of California, San Diego today announced a $5 million gift from locally based medical device company, ResMed Inc., to support sleep medicine research and care at the UC San Diego School of Medicine. The donation was made to the university in honor of ResMed’s founder and chairman of the board, Peter C. Farrell, PhD, DSc. ResMed is the global leader in pioneering new and innovative solutions for the diagnosis, treatment and management of sleep-disordered breathing, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other key chronic diseases.

The funding, totaling $5 million, will establish the Peter C. Farrell Sleep Center of Excellence, in addition to the Peter C. Farrell Presidential Chair in Pulmonary Medicine. Dr. Malhotra is Kenneth M. Moser Professor, Chief of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, and Director of Sleep Medicine in the Department of Medicine.

UC San Diego Health System, Scripps Health Partner in Hospice Care, Training and Research

UC San Diego Health System and Scripps Health are partnering to provide improved continuity of patient care, fellowship training and research in hospice and palliative medicine. Under a new five-year agreement, Scripps will work with UC San Diego to provide outpatient and inpatient hospice care for UC San Diego patients, allowing UC San Diego physicians to better coordinate post-acute care for patients with chronic illness. The joint fellowship program is the only physician training program of its kind in San Diego County …

… The hospice and palliative medicine training program is an extension of a fellowship that was previously offered through San Diego Hospice. Gary Buckholz, MD, UC San Diego, and Holly Yang, MD, Scripps Health, co-direct the joint fellowship program, which will be housed at UC San Diego beginning in July 2015. Dr. Rebecca Sell

Rebecca Sell, MD, associate director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program and assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, won an American Thoracic Society (ATS) 2014 Young Investigator Award for her presentation at the annual meeting of the Asian Pacific Society of Respirology (APSR) in Bali, Indonesia, November 13-16, 2014.

Her presentation was titled, “Difference in Outcomes between Senior Physician and Medicine Resident-led Code Blues.”

Dr. Sell was a chief medical resident in the UC San Diego Internal Medicine Residency Training Program in 2006-2007.

On the APSR 2014 program faculty was Atul Malhotra, MD, Kenneth M. Moser Professor of Medicine, director of sleep medicine and chief of the UC San Diego Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Malhotra, who received an ATS Young Investigator award in 2005, will serve as president of the ATS in 2015-2016.
