How the List Is Determined

Each year, the “Top Doctors” list reports the results of the San Diego County Medical Society’s Physicians of Exceptional Excellence survey, in which physicians are asked to name the board-certified doctors they would choose if one of their own family members or patients needed specialty care.

Limited to society members in the past, the voting was opened to all board-certified San Diego County physicians in 2011.

The San Diego County Medical Society and San Diego Magazine have collaborated to produce the “Top Doctors” list since 2004. The magazine first published a “Top Doctors” list in 2002.
