Meet Our Faculty
Dr. Kamyar’s clinical and investigative interests include evaluation and management of lung transplantation; alpha 1 antitrypsin deficiency/COPD and advanced stages management; sarcoidosis, lymphangioleiomyomatosis, and Interstitial Lung Disease management; and phenotypic variance in cystic fibrosis.
Dr. Akuthota’s clinical interests include asthma; eosinophilic pulmonary disease, including EGPA (Churg-Strauss syndrome), eosinophilic pneumonias, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis, and hypereosinophilic syndromes; and critical care medicine. His investigative interests range from basic research in eosinophil immunobiology to clinical research in asthma and eosinophilic pulmonary diseases.
Dr. Bazhenov’s investigative interests include the role of sleep in memory and learning, cancer cell population dynamics, neural mechanisms in obstructive sleep apnea, information coding in the olfactory system, and the neural mechanisms of seizures.
Dr. Begovic’s clinical and investigative interests include acute respiratory distress syndrome, medical treatment for drug dependence, staffing in intensive care units, and intensive care unit telemedicine.
Dr. Conrad’s clinical interests include diseases of the airways, asthma, cystic fibrosis, and diffuse bronchiecstasis. His investigative interests include the response of airway epithelium to various stimuli particularly involved with inflammation; a focus specifically on the regulations of protein expression of CFTR and the lipid per oxidating enzyme 15-lipoxygenase using transgenic mouse models of asthma and pseudomanias aeruginosa pneumonia.
Dr. Crotty Alexander’s clinical interests include critical-care medicine, asthma, and chronic inflammatory lung disease. Her investigative interests include asthma, microbial pathogenesis in the lung, innate immunity in the lung, hypoxia inducible factor, and extracellular traps.
Dr. Crouch’s clinical interests include general pulmonary medicine, asthma and critical care medicine. His investigative interests include chronic obstructive pulmonary disease management and outcomes, chronic thromboembolic disease, cardiac arrest and resuscitation medicine and medical education.
Dr. ElMaraachli’s clinical interests include Bronchiectasis, drug-resistant Tuberculosis and nontuberculosis Mycobacterial lung infections. His investigative interests include drug-resistant Tuberculosis and improving Tuberculosis diagnostics through more efficient sample collection.
Dr. Fedullo’s clinical interests include Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension, Acute venous thromboembolism, and critical-care medicine. His investigative interests include natural history, diagnosis, and therapy, of acute and chronic thromboembolic disease; and critical-care medicine.
Dr. Fernandes’ clinical interests include venous thromboembolism, chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary arterial hypertension. His investigative Interests include epidemiology of hospital-acquired venous thromboembolism, progression from acute PE to CTEPH and outcomes after pulmonary thromboendarterectomy.
Dr. Fuster’s clinical interests include lung cancer, radiation tumor biopsy and lung injury, and thromboembolic pathophysiology. His investigative interests include mechanisms of tumor neovacularization, roles of tumor glycoscylation in metastasis, role of proteoglycans in tumor lymphaticprogression, radiation tumor biology, and thromboembolism in cancer.
Dr. Ibrahim’s clinical interests include global challenges in treating COPD, diffuse interstitial lung disease, and upper airway dysfunction induced dyspnea. His investigative interests include tissue culture techniques, TGF-BETA effect on te chemicaly injured retina, effect of various growth factors on the regeneration of the pigmented epithelium in the white New Zealand rabbit, and norcardiasis in HIV + Pleural Effusion.
Dr. Kerr’s clinical interests include pulmonary vascular disease, reperfusion lung injury, and ARDS/ALI. Her investigative interests include CTEPH, Reperfusion lung injury following PTE, and ARDS/ALI.
Advanced Lung Disease
Our Advanced Lung Disease Program is a nationally recognized, comprehensive program to treat lung diseases. Our team is dedicated to helping patients breathe easier, live longer, and enjoy a better life. Our lung experts provide highly specialized evaluations and treatment options for all patients suffering from complex lung diseases.
Our intensivists are highly trained and experienced in all aspects of care for critically ill patients in the ICU. This includes management of shock and respiratory failure with life support therapies such as mechanical ventilation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). They also strive to better care through active research efforts.
Specialized care and support services dedicated to improving the length and quality of life for adults with cystic fibrosis.
Our Pulmonary specialists care for patients with a variety of lung conditions including Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Asthma, Pulmonary Emboli, Interstitial Lung Disease, Tuberculosis and Mycobacterial Lung Infections.
The first to offer pulmonary rehabilitation in San Diego in 1968, UC San Diego Health is a leader in the management of chronic respiratory conditions. Our nationally recognized pulmonary rehabilitation program comprises a team of respiratory therapists and pulmonary specialists who are dedicated to improving the quality of life for people with chronic lung disease.

UC San Diego Health is a worldwide leader in the diagnosis, treatment and research of pulmonary vascular disease. Our pulmonary vascular disease program includes experts from pulmonary and cardiovascular services and emphasizes leading-edge treatments.
UCSD Pulmonary, Critical Care and Sleep Medicine has strength in clinical, translational and basic science research. We have many NIH funded principal investigators in addition to a T32 training grant as well as industry and other funding sources. We have expertise in all of the major diseases including asthma, COPD, cystic fibrosis, sleep apnea, sepsis, ARDS, high altitude medicine, pulmonary vascular disease, lung cancer, interstitial lung disease, control of breathing, delirium among others
Our sleep medicine team uses leading-edge technology to collect precise information about a person’s sleep movements, behaviors, and breathing patterns. These details help us identify even minor forms of sleep abnormalities.
