We are pleased to announce that Dr. Ehtisham Mahmud has been appointed as Interim Chair of the Department of Medicine effective July 1, 2020. Dr. Mahmud will work closely with the School of Medicine leadership to ensure the continued success of the Department in its research, teaching and clinical missions.
Dr. Mahmud received his medical degree from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada in 1989. He completed his residency and fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine at UC San Diego followed by a fellowship in Interventional Cardiology and Vascular Medicine at the Andreas Gruentzig Cardiovascular Center of Emory University, Atlanta. Dr. Mahmud was recruited to join the faculty in the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego in 2000, and currently serves as the Edith and William Perlman Chair in Cardiology and Chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine. He is also the Executive Director (Medicine) of the UCSD Cardiovascular Institute.
Dr. Mahmud is internationally renowned as a leader in cardiovascular medicine and has just completed his term as the President of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions. He directs the interventional cardiology clinical trials center at UC San Diego and has focused his research career on new innovations, and outcomes of complex cardiovascular and structural heart interventions. He has pioneered robotic treatment of coronary and peripheral vascular disease, and helped develop novel interventional approaches for the treatment of pulmonary hypertension. He serves on multiple editorial boards, has authored over 200 publications and is a distinguished educator.
