Dr. Wolfgang Dillmann, Chair of the UC San Diego Department of Medicine, is very pleased to announce that Dr. Sanford J. Shattil has been appointed as Interim Chief of the Division of Hematology-Oncology, effective July 23, 2019. Dr. Shattil will work closely with the Chair of Medicine and the CEO of the UCSD Health System to ensure the continued growth of the Division in all of its missions.
Dr. Shattil received his medical degree from University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1968 and subsequently trained in internal medicine and hematology on the Harvard Medical Service of the Boston City Hospital. He then joined the University of Pennsylvania where he eventually served as Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Hematology-Oncology Division. He joined the Scripps Research Institute in 1995 as Professor, with an Adjunct WOS appointment at UCSD. He joined the full-time faculty at UCSD as Professor in 2004 and advanced to Distinguished Professor in 2011. He served as chief of the Division of Hematology-Oncology from 2004 through 2014 and recently served as Vice-Chief.
Dr. Shattil is an exceptional clinician and educator. He is internationally recognized as a premier platelet biologist. He has focused on the biology of and events at the platelet membrane including, in particular, signaling events. He has taken on numerous leadership roles within the University and national organizations.
