Howard J. Jacob to Deliver Daniel T. O’Connor Memorial Lecture February 23

Dr. Howard J. Jacob will present the Daniel T. O’Connor 2nd Annual Memorial Lecture on Thursday, February 23, 2017, at UC San Diego School of Medicine. His topic is “From Hypertension to Genomic Medicine.”

Dr. Jacob’s lecture will take place in the Leichtag Auditorium (Room 107), with a reception immediately following on the patio.

Dr. Jacob is Executive Vice President for Medical Genomics, Chief Medical Genomics Officer, and Faculty Investigator at HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology. His UC San Diego hosts are Bruce A. Hamilton, PhD, and Nicholas J. Schork, PhD.

Dr. Hamilton is Professor, Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Department of Medicine; Director, Genetics Training Program; and Associate Director, Institute for Genomic Medicine. Dr. Schork is UC San Diego Adjunct Professor, Psychiatry, Family and Preventive Medicine and Director of Human Biology, J. Craig Venter Institute.

The lecture is presented in conjunction with the UC San Diego CTRI Seminar Series and the Genetics, Bioinformatics and Systems Biology Colloquium Series.

Richard D. Kolodner Elected to Institute of Medicine

Dr. Richard KolodnerGeneticist and biochemist Richard D. Kolodner, PhD, is a distinguished professor in the departments of medicine (Division of Hematology-Oncology) and cellular and molecular medicine at UC San Diego.

Kolodner co-leads the Laboratory of Cancer Genetics in the San Diego branch of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, which is located at UC San Diego.

At the UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center, he co-leads the Cancer Genomes and Networks research program with Trey Ideker, PhD, and is a member of the faculty of the Cancer Therapeutics Training (CT2) Program.

He is also a member of the Institute for Genomic Medicine and the Biomedical Sciences graduate program.

Kolodner was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 2000 and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2008. His election to the Institute of Medicine brings to 10 the number of Department of Medicine faculty members who are members of the institute.

Methylome modifications offer new measure of our “biological” age

Women live longer than men. Individuals can appear or feel years younger – or older – than their chronological age. Diseases can affect our aging process. When it comes to biology, our clocks clearly tick differently.

Trey Ideker, PhDTrey Ideker, PhD, is co-senior author of the study report. He is professor of medicine and chief of the Division of Medical Genetics, professor of bioengineering and faculty investigator in the UCSD Institute for Genomic Medicine.The overall goal of Ideker’s work is to map and model molecular networks of cellular processes in health and disease, particularly in cancer and the response to genotoxic stress.

Coauthors of the study report include Rob DeConde, a graduate student in Ideker’s laboratory.

Roche Funds Drug Discovery Projects at UC San Diego

The new UC San Diego-Roche Extending Innovation Network (EIN) program has been launched with selection of its first three research projects at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. The UC San Diego-Roche EIN program, which was formalized in June 2011, aims to accelerate the discovery of new drug therapies through research innovation at the interface of industry and academia. M. Geoffrey Rosenfeld, MD
M. Geoffrey Rosenfeld, MD (pictured above), is a co-investigator with Xiang-Dong Fu, PhD, on one of the three UC San Diego-Roche EIN-funded projects, in which the investigators will use genomic and RNA-based approaches to identify new drug targets.

Dr. Rosenfeld is Professor of Medicine in the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism and a professor of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Dr. Fu is Professor of Cellular and Molecular Medicine and a member of the Institute for Genomic Medicine.
