Internal Medicine Residents to Present Their Research at May 5 Symposium

UC San Diego Internal medicine residents who took part in a research block during this academic year will present their work in a poster session at the Second Annual UC San Diego Internal Medicine Resident Research Symposium on May 5, 2016, from 6 to 9 p.m.

The symposium hosts are Wolfgang Dillmann, MD, Helen M. Ranney Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine; Simerjot K. Jassal, MD, Director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program; and Lori Wan, MD, Director of the Combined Medicine-Pediatrics Residency Program.

“We think this will be a wonderful way for residents who have participated in research to share their accomplishments, and to inspire residents who plan to participate in the future,” said Dr. Jassal.

“We hope this will also serve to fuel future projects and create more mentorship opportunities for our residents.”

Last year, 34 residents presented their research at the symposium, which attracted more than 80 residents and faculty members.

This year’s symposium will take place at the Medical Education and Telemedicine (MET) Building Learning Centers (Rooms 141-143) on the School of Medicine campus in La Jolla.

The Internal Medicine Residency Program presented its first annual Resident Research Symposium to a full crowd on Thursday, May 7, with presentations from 34 residents who have taken part in the program’s research block in the last two academic years.

“The 2015 UCSD Internal Medicine Resident Research Symposium was an incredible success,” said program director Simerjot Jassal, MD. “It was a terrific opportunity to showcase the amazing scholarly work our residents have been doing under the outstanding mentorship of our committed faculty,” she said.

More than 80 residents and faculty members attended.

“I was thrilled with the turnout,” Dr. Jassal said. “The enthusiasm in the room was palpable.”

The Department of Medicine and Helen M. Ranney Distinguished Professor and Chair Wolfgang Dillmann, MD, supported the event. Its purpose is to inspire future projects and create more mentorship opportunities.

“I am so proud of our residents,” Dr. Jassal said.

The Doximity report included more than 50,000 peer nominations from board-certified US physicians, and evaluated 3,691 residency training programs across 20 specialties.

Dr. Gallo is professor of medicine and pediatrics and Dr. Carlos is assistant clinical professor in the Division of Dermatology in the Department of Medicine.
